Structure
The workshop is divided into analysis, strategy, tactics, actions, and evaluation.
The analysis listens carefully to the existing cultural and ecological landscape. It searches for the potentials, qualities and problems of the site: (1) biodiversity, topography and hydrology; (2) accesses, road and path networks; (3) condition of the farms, type of crops ; (4) the use of the water; (5) the ecological and landscape condition of the river and the streams; (6) the character of the existing housing urbanization; (7) the connections of the industrial zone and facilities to the rural zone; (8) the situation and state of preservation of the Wool Route; (9) patterns of the existing cultural landscape (how the space is used now by the inhabitants of the city and the farmers); (10) boundaries and limits (with the river, railway and roads). Output photographic inventory and sketches.
Based on the analysis, the strategy (large scale) aims to draw the big picture of a planning proposal for a new sustainable model of urban growth taking into account the creation of a multifunctional landscape in an integrated system. In the strategy is important to analyse why and where things are located. It will be divided in the themes: (1) ecology and hydrology;.(2) rural countryside, farms and food gardens; (3) industry; (4) knowledge and technology; (5) tourism and culture; (6) infrastructures and transportation; (7) facilities; (8) renewable energies and waste; (9) housing. In this process the third dimension of the plan is time (the time implementation of the planning decisions). A mistake at this stage can influence and it risks the future development of the area. It is important to value what already exists and the potentialities of the space, editing it carefully. The strategy takes into account how the landscape operates now and which parts of it should change in order to arrive to the sustainable model we aim. Output: A map of the main implementation of time-strategies.
Based on the planning strategy, different tactics of approach are studied. It involves the middle scale in planning. The group chooses a specific area inside their strategic planning to develop an approach of transition towards a sustainable model using exploratory and inductive logic. One decision brings to the next. Output Middle scale plans of the area chosen to develop, sections and photomontage image-collages.
Based on the tactics, the group divides the tasks to show the different design actions necessary to transform and recover the landscape. It involves the small scale, where decisions are based in the detail of urban, architectural and landscape architecture projects. Output: plans, sections and details of design actions, including perspectives.
The evaluation will help to draw the conclusions about the results and value their strengths and weaknesses.
